Details of Disappearance
Smith was last seen at her residence in the 800 block of Weghorst Street in Indianapolis, Indiana at approximately 10:30 p.m. on December 27, 2000. Her son told authorities that her former husband, Steven Halcomb, was sitting in the family’s living room with Smith at the time. Her son reported that Smith appeared to be experiencing drug-induced sleepiness. Her two children did not hear any suspicious activity within their house during the night. They reported her as a missing person when Smith could not be located the following morning. She also missed an appointment that day. She left behind her car, jewelry, and money at her house.

Halcomb had been paroled from a drug-related conviction in August 2000, four months before Smith vanished. Smith previously told her family members that she felt threatened by Halcomb. Halcomb vanished at the same time Smith disappeared; he failed to show up for work the next day. His vehicle, a 1983 light blue Ford LTD with Indiana license plates 95W7801, was also missing.

Halcomb turned himself into authorities on January 11, 2001 after violating his parole. He had been in California. His vehicle was located and inspected for possible evidence related to Smith’s disappearance, but nothing was found during the search. Halcomb has maintained his innocence regarding Smith’s case and told investigators he never saw his former wife around the time she vanished. Smith’s family believes that Halcomb was involved in her case. Halcomb was denied parole in 2001 and remained in prison until the end of his sentence in 2003. Halcomb was indicted for Smith’s murder in August 2003, over two and a half years after she disappeared. A witness for the grand jury said they had heard Halcomb confess that he strangled Smith. On Wednesday, December 15, 2004, he was found guilty of murder. Smith’s body has never been recovered.

Search still on for missing west suburban man

February 22, 2010 (WHEATON, Ill.) (WLS) — The DuPage County Sheriff’s Department says it has not given up on its search for a missing west suburban businessman.

John Spira, 45, of St. Charles has been missing since February 23, 2007.

There are other missing person cases in the Chicago area that have gotten more attention, but investigators say that few are more mysterious than the circumstances surrounding John Spira’s disappearance.

Spira, co-owner of Universal Cable Construction, was last seen at a company outing in West Chicago. He was also a blues guitarist who played in a number of local clubs with his band, the Rabble Rousers.

Spira’s family has been out searching a number of time times and even had a group of 40 people helping on one occasion. They have also handed out fliers to help generate tips for detectives. But so far, nothing has helped to direct the investigation in a specific direction.

“We would like to have some direction for the investigation as far as whether we’re definitively dealing with foul play or somebody who is missing voluntarily. We don’t even have that answer. A lot of information that can be taken both ways,” said Detective Commander Mark Edwalds, DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives say there have been no signs of foul play but no signs to suggest that Spira became missing voluntarily. Spira’s truck, with his laptop still in it, was parked behind his place of business at the time that he was reported missing.

Police say they can use some help. The case is still open but they need some tips to generate further investigation.

Stebic probe gets boost

May 1, 2010

BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter

Three years after Lisa Stebic vanished, police are stepping up — not scaling back — their search for the missing Plainfield woman.

A new regional police task force that can field more than 80 detectives has started working with Plainfield police to determine what happened to the 37-year-old mother of two.

“It never hurts to have fresh eyes look at an investigation,” Plainfield Police Chief William Doster said Friday.

Stebic was last seen on April 30, 2007, while in the midst of a divorce from her husband, Craig Stebic, who has been named by police as a person of interest in her disappearance. Craig Stebic, who couldn’t be reached for comment Friday, retains custody of the couple’s children, now 13 and 15. To mark the anniversary of Lisa Stebic’s disappearance, Plainfield police announced they have joined forces with the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force to solve the baffling case.

The two-county police task force launched last year draws experienced investigators and crime scene specialists from local police agencies to help smaller departments with difficult cases. The Plainfield department, for example, has five investigators.

“Criminal investigations can be very complex, dynamic and challenging. When you have a team of highly skilled, well-trained, seasoned detectives at your disposal, it only makes sense to bring them in,” said Joliet Police Chief Fred Hayes, who chairs the task force’s executive board.

Friends and relatives said they are hopeful the addition of new police investigators could help solve the case.

Family members said the time that has passed has only sharpened their pain over Lisa’s disappearance. “This has been an extremely difficult time,” said Stebic’s cousin Melanie Greenberg. “There’s a gaping hole in our family where Lisa used to be.”

_____

After 3 years, search for Lisa Stebic continues

April 30, 2010

The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force will join the investigation into the disappearance of Lisa Stebic, authorities said today, the third anniversary of the day she was last seen.

The move means that the case will now be investigated by more than 80 new detectives who will try to determine what happened to the mother of two. New Plainfield Police Chief William Doster said he requested help from the task force because the case needs fresh eyes.

“One of the priorities I set for myself when I became chief was to review the Stebic files,” he said. “The investigation was very well done by my detectives. It never hurts to have fresh eyes look at an investigation.”

Doster said in three years, no one has seen any activity by Stebic: no cell phone use, no use of her credit cards, social security number or identification. That has led authorities to believe she was a victim of foul play.

Stebic was last seen on April 30, 2007, at her home in Plainfield. Her husband, Craig Stebic, was working in the yard and her two children had gone to the store for candy, said Melanie Greenberg, a spokeswoman for Lisa’s family and the missing woman’s cousin. When the children returned, Lisa Stebic was gone, and no one saw her again.

“She vanished seemingly into thin air,” Greenberg said, holding a picture of her cousin. “The person who wanted Lisa to go missing wanted to erase her. It’s been three years but we’re fighting just as hard for Lisa to be found.”
